Where the mountains meet the sea. Hop on little railways and climb up the wooded valleys into the mountains. Especially rich in history and heritage, reflected in a fascinating choice of places to visit and cultural attractions. Home to picturesque village harbours, a quirky Italianate style village and the former slate capital of the world. Bounce or zip-wire underground in a huge slate cavern, experience deep mine tours, explorer quarries and have a go at slate splitting. Stunning wooded gorges and waterfalls converge and meander through lush green meadows dropping to the valley floor and onto a large sandy estuary.

What you can expect

Catch the world’s oldest narrow-gauge railway from the coast to one of the most formidable and historic slate-quarrying towns, climbing over 700 feet through tranquil pastures, magnificent forests all whilst clinging to the side of the mountain.

Set on its own tranquil peninsula, enjoy beautiful estuary and mountain views from a much loved private village also famed for its pottery, with whimsical and intriguing Italianate architecture and kooky cottages overlooking ornamental gardens, plazas and a campanile.

Travel five hundred feet down and one hundred and sixty years back in time into the belly of a mountain on the steepest cable railway in Europe. Extraordinary light projection, enhanced reality technology and explosive special effects will transport you to another time.
